Economic & Social Benefits
The proposal will generate significant economic benefits and employment opportunities, including for Traditional Owners (TOs) in the Wyndham area, including:
- $6 million invested in planning, environmental studies, consultations etc, which has been spent in Australia.
- Payment of all relevant corporate taxes in Australia.
- Payment of State mining royalties per dry-ton of sand.
- Payment of additional royalties to TOs per dry-ton of sand (this is not legally required but is offered to the TOs by Boskalis as a responsible operator).
- Up to forty jobs for Australian crew on the Sand Production Vessel (SPV) (alternating two-week swings of 20 crew each), with first priority given to local TOs, including training and career development.
- (in addition, Boskalis will offer marine crew cadetships and training to local TOs on the Boskalis global fleet which is >600 vessels).
- Support to TOs to establish a small marine services business in Wyndham to support the operation in Cambridge Gulf, for example transferring people, equipment and supplies when needed.
- Environmental monitoring contract for the 15-year life of the proposal, ideally with TO indigenous ranger groups, including training, vessel and equipment.
- Funding for scientific research on key marine biodiversity and fisheries issues in the Cambridge Gulf area, in consultation with TOs and other relevant partners.
- Possible sponsorship of the Wyndham Volunteer Marine Rescue Group and other similar local groups and community initiatives.
